2013 Fresh Summit Retail Produce Tour recap

2013 Fresh Summit Retail Produce Tour recap
The retail produce tour was held on October 17, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana as part of Fresh Summit 2013. The tour offers a unique and up-close look at fresh produce marketing and merchandising at several local retail locations including Robért Fresh Market, Hong Kong Food Market, Breaux Mart and Rouses Market. Each tour stop featured an insider’s look at what’s new in merchandising, packaging, technology and fruit and vegetable commodities.

Robért Fresh Market

The first stop was Robért Fresh Market, a neighborhood-oriented, full-service market filled with quality fresh produce (supplied by local growers whenever possible), hard to find gourmet items, signature offerings made from scratch in the foodservice and bakery departments and prime cuts of meat.

Hong Kong Food Market

Second on the retail produce tour was Hong Kong Food Market, which is the largest Asian supermarket in Louisiana. The market carries more than 200 fresh produce items and lists young coconut, Chinese vegetables, mango, bean sprouts, bitter melon among its top selling produce.

Breaux Mart

Breaux Mart was the third stop on the retail produce tour. According to store manager Jason Weishaar, fresh produce represents 11-12% of total store sales. Weishaar says he’s seen organic and local products trending among consumers and the produce industry. Weishaar says he anticipates non-GMO produce becoming a trend in the next three to five years.

Rouses Market

The final stop on the retail produce tour was Rouses Market. The company opened four new stores in 2011, including the first full-service grocery store in downtown New Orleans in nearly 50 years. Rouses is committed to supporting new local food startups, local farmers, fisherman, dairies, bakers and manufacturers.

PMA thanks all of the retail produce tour hosts: Breaux Mart, Hong Kong Food Market, Robért Fresh Market and Rouses Market. PMA also thanks the following tour sponsors for their support of the retail produce tour and Fresh Summit: Natural Delights, Port of Houston Authority and Meister Media Worldwide.
